Background of the study
Morphological richness refers to the complexity and variety of word-formation processes within a language. Nigerian Pidgin, with its eclectic mix of indigenous and colonial influences, exhibits significant morphological innovation. This study assesses the morphological richness of Nigerian Pidgin as showcased in the broadcasts of Wazobia FM, a popular media outlet known for its dynamic language use. The radio station serves as a microcosm of contemporary linguistic practices, where creative coinages, blending, and reanalysis of words are common (Okoro, 2023). By analyzing broadcast transcripts and live interactions, the study examines how speakers negotiate meaning and identity through morphological processes. The research draws on frameworks from contact linguistics and creole studies, highlighting how morphological diversity in Nigerian Pidgin reflects broader social and cultural trends (Chima, 2024). In addition, the study considers the impact of media on language evolution, exploring whether the informal and innovative context of radio contributes to an increase in morphological complexity (Ibrahim, 2025). Through a detailed examination of affixation, compounding, and reduplication patterns, this investigation aims to provide insights into the adaptive nature of Nigerian Pidgin and its role in contemporary communication.

Statement of the problem
Although Nigerian Pidgin is celebrated for its linguistic creativity, there is limited research quantifying its morphological richness, particularly in media contexts such as Wazobia FM. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the language used on the station is highly innovative, yet systematic documentation is lacking (Okoro, 2023). This deficiency hinders our understanding of how morphological processes contribute to the dynamism and evolution of Nigerian Pidgin. Furthermore, the influence of broadcast media on morphological change remains underexplored, leaving questions about the permanence and societal impact of these innovations (Chima, 2024). Addressing these gaps is critical for appreciating the full linguistic potential of Nigerian Pidgin and for guiding educational and media policies aimed at preserving its unique characteristics (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

To assess the morphological richness of Nigerian Pidgin as used on Wazobia FM.

To analyze word-formation processes such as affixation, compounding, and reduplication.

To evaluate the influence of broadcast media on morphological innovation.

Research questions:

What morphological processes are most prominent in Nigerian Pidgin at Wazobia FM?

How does broadcast media influence morphological creativity?

What are the implications of morphological richness for language identity?

Research Hypotheses:

Nigerian Pidgin exhibits significant morphological richness in broadcast contexts.

Media usage at Wazobia FM enhances the creative use of morphological processes.

Increased morphological richness correlates with a stronger sense of linguistic identity among speakers.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it illuminates the morphological complexity of Nigerian Pidgin in a media context, offering insights into language evolution and cultural identity. The findings will be valuable for linguists, media practitioners, and educators in promoting and preserving the dynamic features of Nigerian Pidgin (Okoro, 2023; Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing morphological richness in Nigerian Pidgin as used at Wazobia FM. It focuses solely on morphological processes within the media context.

Definitions of terms:

Morphological Richness: The complexity and variety of word-formation processes in a language.

Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used in Nigeria with a blend of indigenous and colonial influences.

Broadcast Media: Media channels, particularly radio, used to disseminate spoken language.
